Supporting Mental Health Through Social Media

GUELPH, ONTARIO, April 1, 2011 — Over the last five months, the Mood Disorders Society of Canada has
engaged the social media company Webs9 Inc. to assist their organization in implementing a social media
strategy. During this time, they have created in-depth presences on both Facebook and Twitter. Support
and resources on mental health are available directly through this format and they are reaching out to
well over 1,300 persons on a daily basis and this reach continues to grow.

Dave Gallson of the Mood Disorders Society of Canada says: “The need to reach out through social media
has been a priority of the MDSC. In particular, engaging the youth of Canada in discussions on mental
illness is crucial.”

“By their very nature social media sites lend themselves well to providing a network of support and
increasing awareness about mental health issues” says Paul Benoit of Webs9 Inc. “People are able to
share their experiences with their peers and comment on the engaging questions that the Mood Disorders
Society of Canada distributes on their Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts. By commenting
on the MDSC’s page, the commenter’s peers are exposed to the MDSC and are invited to contribute as
well. That, in turn, exposes their peers to the Mood Disorders Society of Canada’s message, inviting the
peers of the peers to engage with MDSC – facilitating viral awareness of mental health issues.”

To help leverage the power of social media, Dance For Depression awareness and fundraising events will
be promoted through social media. These events are designed for middle and high school student councils
and youth centres to hold a school dance that raises awareness and fundraises through the sale of tickets,
t-shirts, raffles, and other ideas that the students may suggest. Social media will be used to provide event
information, facilitate discussions, distribute literature and education on Mental Health, show event
pictures, and build awareness. Other awareness events such as tournaments and walk a thons are also
